A trip back in time for this issue. It’s a rainy Monday morning in July, 6 a.m. Batteries primed, the Bartoletti transporter shakes itself out of slumber and into life.
The spacious driver’s cabin moves through the gate of the large brick building and into the lukewarm summer rain. It’s a sight that takes me back to decades past, when the foundations of today’s dreams were laid.
Seventy years of Ferrari can be felt and experienced all in one go. It’s hard to believe that this is how the journey to the track once began for a Formula 1 team - with only essentials in the cargo hold and a great deal of optimism.
What an adventure it must have been. Imagine the experiences that this little team lived through in the ’50s and ’60s, and the stories that this Ferrari factory truck could tell us today. It wasn’t our first contact with the myth of Ferrari, but certainly the most intense, thanks to the likes of Bernie Ecclestone, Niki Lauda, and Dan Gurney offering their thoughts - all of them legends of motorsport in their own right. They talked about their experiences and memories of the Ferrari brand. Bernie Ecclestone summed it up perfectly: ‘Ferrari is Formula 1.
When you talk about F1, you talk about Ferrari.’ No other team has been such a long-standing, consistent part of the Formula 1 circus. No other has been such a beacon of the extraordinary. Mario Linke, who takes care of some of the featured cars with great passion, consistently lives by and implements the values of originality and authenticity like few others in the historic motorsport scene.
He repeatedly opened our eyes to the unique and special. ‘Nothing is like Ferrari,’ he keeps reminding us. Ferrari has always focussed on motorsport, with road cars only the means to an end. As early as the late 1940s, Maranello built unique racing cars, and did so with an incomparable passion.
