Bruno Giacomelli Continuavano a chiamarmi "Jack O'Malley"
Foreword by ROBIN HERD (founder of Scuderia MARCH with which Gicomelli won in Formula 2 and Formula 3)
Bruno Giacomelli is one of the best loved drivers of Formula 1’s fabulous Seventies and Eighties. With 69 GPs under his belt and a podium at Las Vegas in 1981, he was synonymous with Alfa Romeo thanks to a fantastic pole at Watkins Glen in 1980 and a stand-out performance in the USA East GP through to a hugely unfortunate retirement with a technical issue after having tortured all the big names in F1, lapping the Ferraris of Scheckter and Villeneuve.
However, as the nostalgic title of his autobiography written with the journalist Mario Donini suggests, Bruno was affectionately nicknamed “Jack O’Malley”, ever since his time in F1 with McLaren, emphasising the respect the driver from Roncadelle had always enjoyed in Great Britain. This was in part due to his decision to move to England in the mid-Seventies when he became the favourite driver of Robin Herd, the March owner, with whom he was to dominate the European F2 championship in that enchanted in that remarkable 1978 season.
F1, F2, F3, Formula IndyCar, Prototypes World Championship, Indy 500, Le Mans… Bruno had a taste of everything in the golden age of his career. Hence his colourful, sincere and revelatory account of a racing life is a marvellous exploration of world much missed by all true enthusiasts.
