Early in the 1970s, the world of major endurance races changed radically with the advent of the enthralling and unforgettable Sports Prototype cars with their five-litre displacement limit, first and foremost the Porsche 917 and the Ferrari 512 S and 512 M.

In the years that followed, the World Championship for Makes endured mixed fortunes, underwent countless regulatory changes and yet, thanks above all to the Le Mans 24 Hours, it managed to survive, renewing itself time and time again, through to the present day.
